It’s not the facemask I wore obviously. But my face sure felt just as puffy from that flu! 🙂

Courage

my facemask?
don’t want to get you sick–
you kiss the cotton anyway

Commentary:

Remembering how others have defied barriers can be incredibly powerful memories that drive us deeper through our healing.

Even the simplest, silliest, and far too easily forgettable moments.

But this is partly why I’m continuing with these haiku experiments. To celebrate some of these moments, and re-capture a sense of gratitude and wonder for the beautiful within the ordinary.

Now, for those of you who are curious about my adventures these days, this haiku reminds me of a really funny moment with a somewhat recent date who is now a very dear friend to me. She has been instrumental in my healing process post-divorce, so I am eternally grateful to her for the brief season that we did have the opportunity to share together.

This haiku is a brief snapshot on a really fun date, even though I was horrendously sick with the flu. But it was a closing gala film at the international film festival, so there was no way I’d cancel. So, armed with my Halls candy, a pack of carbon-layered black medical/surgical facemasks from Mini-Sou, and inspired by my adventures in Japan, I defied my hacking cough (perhaps stupidly lol) and went anyway.

Well, I’m a fairly responsible dude, so I didn’t want to get her sick. So we figured, hey, this time you can plop a kiss through the facemask. I was half-joking, half-hoping. And of course, she was courageous. So she kissed the cotton anyways.

I was half-alive with the flu, devoured my Halls cough drops and kept drinking hot water like that pendulum dipping birds toy on your office desk…but I think that day was one of my favourite memories of her.

…So, thank you.

I appreciate you ;-).

Reflection: What’s the funniest or weirdest way that you’ve shown your affection to someone you care about?
